Whether it’s something small like a blowout (yes that’s everyday stuff to us) on the way to soccer practice or an engine light during a family road trip, knowing the pricing factors can help you prepare and avoid high-cost towing services

Tow Truck Cost Breakdown

There are several factors that go into the cost of a tow-truck but we’ve prepared this post to educate you in advance. Type of tow, the distance of the tow, and any additional services are the three factors. As a father in the current economy, I try to cut costs wherever possible. Even if you don’t use our tow truck service we want you to have the information to make the best decision for you and your family.

Hook and Chain Towing Cost

Your average tow-type – For a local tow of under 5 miles, you might pay anywhere from $50 to $125. When it comes to AWD vehicles – which many family cars are these days – 

We highly advise using an alternative such as a flatbed tow.

Flatbed Tow Truck Cost

Flatbed tows are safer and of course, more expensive (quality has gone up in price unfortunately in any industry). For a local tow it can average around $90 and $150. This is usually the standard for newer cars and SUVs.

Long-Distance Towing Cost

If you’re on a family vacation and you break down far from home and decide to tow home, it’ll cost you. Long-distance tows can cost anywhere from $2 to $4 per mile. A 100-mile tow could set you back $200 to $400.

Towing outside of standard hours: Your standard hours are 9-to-5 or some companies do 7-to-7 (our hours). Most towing outside of these hours can cost another $50 – $100 sometimes.

Winching: If you find yourself & your vehicle in a ditch or stuck deep in mud and you need to be pulled out – winching services can add $50 to $250 to your bill.

How to Save on Tow Truck Costs

Roadside Assistance Programs: There are some insurance companies that offer roadside assistance. This can be a lifesaver if you have a situation that doesn’t require a tow but you still need some help. 

Credit Card Benefits: Some credit card companies have roadside assistance as a perk. 

Local Mechanic Relationships: Most local towing companies might offer more reasonable towing rates for regular customers. Here at DSK we pride ourself as one of those companies. 

After a few unexpected tows over the years, I’ve learned to keep an emergency fund specifically for car troubles. I suggest setting aside at least $40 every month for potential towing needs. It’s peace of mind and truly is worth every penny when you’re stranded with a car full of cranky kids.
